On Novemeber 27, 2021 protesters gathered in the Neukölln neighborhood in Berlin to demonstrate against the sale of the apartment building at Hermanstraße 48 to a private investor. The current residents fear being ejected from their apartments and ateliers. Day before, an administrative court had thrown out the Right of First Refusal, a legal mechanism that allowed state governments to interven in the sale of apartment buildings in defense of renters. The decision animated protesters throughout the city, which has seen rising living costs over the last decade that have pushed low-income renters out of neighborhoods in Berlin’s center.
